Golden Gate Bridge Accessibility Guide

The Golden Gate Bridge east sidewalk is flat, paved, and fully wheelchair accessible with no steps or elevation changes across its 1.7-mile span. The Welcome Plaza has ADA parking, accessible restrooms, and ramps. Strollers, battery-powered wheelchairs, scooters, and service animals are all permitted.

Bridge Sidewalk Accessibility

East Sidewalk

  • Surface: Smooth concrete, flat grade throughout
  • Width: Approximately 10 feet — room for wheelchairs to pass
  • Length: 1.7 miles (2.7 km) each way
  • Curbs/steps: None — fully ramped access from Welcome Plaza
  • Hours: 5:00 AM – 6:30 PM daily
  • Wind: Can be strong (20–35 mph gusts). Secure loose items.

Mobility Devices

  • Manual wheelchairs: Fully permitted. The flat grade makes propulsion manageable, but wind resistance can be challenging.
  • Power wheelchairs/scooters: Permitted. Ensure full battery — the round trip is 3.4 miles.
  • Strollers: Welcome. The path is suitable for all types including jogging strollers.
  • Service animals: Permitted. Other pets must be leashed.
  • Segways/e-scooters: Not permitted on the sidewalk.

Accessible Parking & Transit

ADA Parking

The Welcome Plaza lot has designated ADA spaces near the bridge access ramp. The Vista Point lot (north side, free) also has accessible spaces. Both connect to the sidewalk via paved, ramped paths. Arrive before 10 AM on weekends for best availability.

PresidiGo Shuttle

The free PresidiGo shuttle is wheelchair accessible and stops near the bridge. It connects to Muni and BART at the Presidio Transit Center. Runs weekends and select weekdays. No reservation needed. Kneeling buses with ramps.

Muni & Golden Gate Transit

Muni bus 28 (wheelchair accessible) stops near the bridge toll plaza. Golden Gate Transit buses 130/150 cross the bridge with wheelchair lifts. All public transit in SF is ADA compliant. Clipper card with discount fare available for eligible riders.
