Key Facts About Golden Gate Bridge Tolls

One Direction Only

Tolls are collected southbound only (entering San Francisco from Marin County). Driving north across the bridge (leaving San Francisco) is free. This means if you drive to Sausalito and back, you pay the toll once on the return trip.

No Toll Booths

The Golden Gate Bridge went all-electronic in 2013. There are no toll booths or cash lanes. Do not stop on the bridge — just drive through at normal speed. Cameras and FasTrak sensors handle everything automatically.

Rental Cars

Most rental companies (Hertz, Enterprise, Avis, Budget) have toll programs that automatically charge the toll plus a $2–5 daily processing fee. Check your rental agreement. To avoid the extra fee, set up a one-time payment at bayareafastrak.org within 48 hours of crossing using your license plate.

Toll Violations

If you don't have FasTrak and don't pay within 48 hours, an invoice is mailed to the registered vehicle owner. Unpaid invoices incur a $25 penalty after 21 days. International visitors and out-of-state drivers should set up payment at bayareafastrak.org before or immediately after crossing.
