What to Wear at the Golden Gate Bridge: A Practical Seasonal Guide
In This Article
The Golden Rule: Layers
The number one rule for dressing at the Golden Gate Bridge is layers. Temperatures on the bridge can be 10–15°F colder than downtown San Francisco, and conditions can shift from foggy and 52°F to sunny and 65°F within an hour. A layering system lets you adapt without being miserable in either direction.
At minimum, bring a windproof outer layer — even on days that look sunny from your hotel. The bridge is 746 feet above the water at its highest point, and steady winds of 15–25 mph are normal. Wind chill alone can make a 60°F day feel like 45°F.
Summer (June–August)
Summer at the Golden Gate Bridge is not what most visitors expect. While the rest of California bakes, San Francisco’s summer temperatures average 55–65°F with frequent fog. Mark Twain’s (likely misattributed) quote applies: “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”
What to wear: A medium-weight base layer (long-sleeve T-shirt or light fleece), a windproof jacket (not just a hoodie — it needs to block wind), and long pants. Bring a light scarf or buff for your neck. If walking the bridge, wear closed-toe shoes with good grip — the sidewalk can be slippery with fog moisture.
What to skip: Shorts, sandals, tank tops. You’ll see tourists in these clothes shivering on the bridge while locals walk past in jackets.
Fall (September–November)
September and October are San Francisco’s warmest months and the clearest at the bridge. Temperatures can reach 70–80°F, and fog is rare. This is the one time you might actually be comfortable in a T-shirt on the bridge.
What to wear: A T-shirt or light long-sleeve with a packable windbreaker in your bag. Sunglasses and sunscreen — the sun reflects intensely off the water and the bridge’s paint. Comfortable walking shoes.
November cools down and rain becomes possible. Add a light rain jacket to your pack and switch to warmer layers.
Winter (December–February)
Winter brings San Francisco’s rainy season. Temperatures range from 45–58°F, and Pacific storms bring rain and strong winds. The bridge can be spectacular during storm breaks when dramatic clouds frame the towers.
What to wear: A warm mid-layer (fleece or down vest), waterproof outer shell, and water-resistant pants or jeans. A warm hat and gloves are worthwhile on windy days. Waterproof shoes or boots are essential — the bridge sidewalk puddles during rain.
Avoid umbrellas on the bridge. The wind will destroy them instantly. A hooded waterproof jacket is far more practical.
Spring (March–May)
Spring is a transition season — rain tapers off, fog begins increasing, and temperatures slowly warm to 55–65°F. March can still be wet; May starts feeling like fog season.
What to wear: The classic San Francisco layering system works best. A base layer, light fleece or sweater, and a windproof/water-resistant outer shell. Pack sunglasses for the clear spells between fog and clouds.
Special Tips for Activities
Walking the bridge (1.7 miles one way): Wear comfortable, supportive shoes with good traction. The pedestrian sidewalk has expansion joints and metal grates that can be slippery when wet. Budget 30–45 minutes each way, and layer for wind that intensifies at mid-span.
Biking across: Wind can be challenging, especially heading north toward Sausalito. Wear snug layers that won’t flap — a cycling jacket is ideal. Eye protection (sunglasses or clear lenses) helps with wind and grit.
Photography: Bring a ziplock bag to protect your camera from fog moisture and salt spray. Lens cloths are essential — fog condenses on glass surfaces within minutes. Fingerless gloves let you operate camera controls while keeping your hands warm.
