The View from Angel Island

Angel Island, the largest natural island in San Francisco Bay, sits about 2 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The island's western and southern shorelines provide excellent views of the bridge, and the summit of Mount Livermore (788 feet) offers a 360-degree panorama that includes the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco skyline, and the Bay Bridge. Accessible by ferry from Tiburon or San Francisco, Angel Island is a state park with hiking trails, historic military installations, and some of the best bridge views in the Bay Area.

Best Viewing Spot

Hike to the top of Mount Livermore (788 ft) via the Sunset Trail for the best panoramic views including the bridge. The Perimeter Road on the island's western side also offers good bridge views at a lower elevation. Camp Reynolds on the island's west point has direct sightlines to the bridge.

Photography Tips

Mount Livermore's summit provides a rare elevated perspective of the bridge from the north side of the bay. A telephoto lens (200mm+) is useful to pull the bridge closer in the frame. The ferry ride to Angel Island also passes near the bridge and offers excellent water-level photo opportunities.

Fog & Visibility

Angel Island often sits above or east of the fog line. On classic San Francisco fog days, you may have clear skies on the island while watching fog pour through the Golden Gate strait below — a spectacular sight from Mount Livermore.
