The View from Ferry Building

The Ferry Building on the Embarcadero is about 4 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. From the waterfront promenade behind the building, looking west-northwest across the bay, the bridge is visible on clear days. The view shows both towers and the full span, though at a distance similar to the view from Pier 39. The Ferry Building is a popular starting point for walks or bike rides to the bridge — the Embarcadero waterfront path connects to Crissy Field and eventually the bridge itself.

Best Viewing Spot

Walk to the waterfront promenade behind the Ferry Building (bay side) and look west-northwest. The view is best from the end of the piers near the building. For a better view, walk north along the Embarcadero toward Pier 7, which extends further into the bay.

Photography Tips

The Ferry Building clock tower makes an excellent foreground element with the bridge in the background — use a telephoto lens to compress the two. From Pier 7, you can line up the bridge between the pier railings for a classic leading-lines composition.

Fog & Visibility

The Embarcadero is typically one of the sunnier areas of San Francisco. If you can see the bridge from here, conditions at the bridge are likely good. The Ferry Building is also the arrival point for the Sausalito ferry — a great way to see the bridge up close from the water.
