Can You See the Golden Gate Bridge from Marin Headlands & Hawk Hill?
Yes — the most famous elevated bridge viewpoint. Marin Headlands & Hawk Hill is 0.5 miles south-southeast of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The View from Marin Headlands & Hawk Hill
The Marin Headlands are the dramatic coastal hills just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and Hawk Hill (920 feet) is their crown jewel viewpoint. Together, they offer what many consider the single best view of the Golden Gate Bridge anywhere — a sweeping downward angle showing the full bridge span, San Francisco skyline, and the Pacific Ocean in one frame. The headlands are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and include a network of trails, historic military batteries, and scenic overlooks. Hawk Hill itself is a short drive or hike from the Alexander Avenue exit off Highway 101.
Best Viewing Spot
Drive or hike up Conzelman Road to Hawk Hill for the definitive bridge photograph — the full span laid out below you with the city behind it. Battery 129 just below Hawk Hill also provides excellent views. For a different perspective, walk the Coastal Trail to Point Bonita for a wide-angle view of the bridge from the west. The Nike Missile Site parking area offers easy access to multiple viewpoints.
Photography Tips
Hawk Hill is THE location for the classic Golden Gate Bridge postcard shot — the downward angle with the bridge curving across the strait. A 24-70mm lens covers both wide and tight compositions. Sunset is legendary here, with the bridge and city glowing golden. Arrive early to claim a tripod spot. For fog photography, Hawk Hill is unmatched — watch the marine layer pour through the strait below you.
Full photography guideFog & Visibility
The Marin Headlands and Hawk Hill sit right at the coast and are frequently fogged in during summer. However, when the fog sits at bridge-deck level, Hawk Hill rises above it — creating the famous towers-in-fog shots. Conzelman Road closes in heavy fog, so check conditions before driving up. Morning fog often burns off by midday.
